Happy New Year: Looking Ahead to 2026!

Happy New Year to our fantastic network! As we step into 2026, I’m feeling a genuine sense of optimism for what lies ahead. Reflecting on 2025, it’s clear it was a challenging year for many jobseekers and, in turn, for the recruitment agencies that have worked so hard to navigate our evolving landscape in the UK.

From shifting candidate expectations to economic uncertainty, it was a year that tested everyone's resilience and adaptability.

I spoke with many clients during end-of-year reviews, and a common theme emerged...There’s relief that key legislative milestones, such as the budget 💰 and employment rights bills ⚖️ have been finalised, giving businesses more clarity and confidence to plan for growth. For me, it’s encouraging to see hiring managers shifting their focus from reactive decision-making to more considered, strategic workforce planning.

Another trend that stood out in conversations this year has been the tempered excitement around AI 🤖 The initial 'shiny-thing' novelty has worn off for many, replaced by practical exploration of how humans and AI can work together to enhance productivity, support decision-making, and deliver better outcomes for clients. Employers seem increasingly inclined to develop collaboration rather than replacement, which feels like a healthy and balanced approach.

Beyond AI, I’ve noticed other UK recruitment trends shaping the horizon:

  • 🏡 Flexible and hybrid working remains a priority, with candidates seeking roles that balance autonomy with connection.

  • ⚙️ Skills-based hiring continues to gain traction, as organisations look to hire for capability rather than just credentials.

  • 🧘 Employee wellbeing and retention strategies are also at the forefront, as companies recognise that attracting talent is only half the battle; keeping them engaged is equally critical.

  • 🎓 Upskilling and reskilling are becoming non-negotiable, as businesses invest in internal talent development to stay competitive in an evolving market.

Despite the challenges, I’m hopeful.

The lessons of 2025 have strengthened both candidates and employers, and the renewed clarity around regulations, budgets, and strategic priorities gives us a strong foundation for 2026. As recruitment professionals, we have an opportunity to bridge the gap between talent and opportunity, helping people find meaningful roles while supporting businesses to grow sustainably.

Here’s to a year of progress, collaboration, and growth 🥂 I’m excited to see what 2026 holds for our industry and for all the brilliant people I’m lucky to work with!
